Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Athletic Training, the Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for assisting the supervision and coordination of LaGrange College’ s overall sports medicine program; to include but not limited to, injury prevention, evaluation, management and treatment of athletic injuries, short and long-term rehabilitation of athletic injuries, education, and counseling of student-athletes. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for assisting in athletic related health care administration in consultation with and under the supervision of the head athletic trainer, team physician(s) and other qualified medical personnel. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by LaGrange College, its athletic conference affiliates, and NCAA Division III rules and regulations. This is a full time, ten-month position.

 

Job Duties (but not limited to):

  • Assists in scheduling and administration of student-athlete pre-participation physical exams
  • Assists in the prevention of athletic injuries and illnesses, evaluation of athletic injuries, and treatment of athletic injuries
  • Provides counseling and education to student athletes, coaches, and parents dealing with athletic injuries
  • Reports status of student athlete injuries to the Director of Athletic Training and appropriate coaching staff
  • Assists the Director of Athletic Training with compilation, input, organization, and maintenance of medical records for student-athletes
  • Assists the Director of Athletic Training with inventory, bidding, ordering, receiving, and maintenance of all athletic training room supplies and equipment
  • Assists with coordination and scheduling of medical coverage for home and away competitions
  • Responsible for the supervision, education and recruitment of student assistant workers (work-study)
  • Enforces code of conduct and rules for athletic training facilities and equipment
  • Follows emergency action plan for athletic teams in conjunction with team physicians, area emergency medical services, and local hospitals
  • Works with doctors and other allied health professionals to deliver care to student athletes
  • Shares in responsibility of athletic training room maintenance and upkeep
  • Maintains department’s certification and license requirements of NATABOC and the State of Georgia
  • Completes and/or assists with various tasks or projects that may be assigned by the Athletic Director or the Director of Athletic Training

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or an accredited educational program by the NATA-BOC. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certification by BOC and licensed, or eligible for license, to practice as an Athletic Trainer in the state of Georgia.
  • Licensure, certification and/or registration with National Athletic Trainers Association.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED training required.
  • Knowledge and experience in the administration of a variety of assessment tools, treatment plans and equipment.
  • Previous experience in collegiate health care setting preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required for travel to satellite locations in the immediate area.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge: general knowledge of the principles and practices of Athletic Training including conditioning and injury prevention, as well as injury assessment and rehabilitation; the full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment; rules, regulations and guidelines established by LaGrange College and NCAA pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety; Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling Blood Borne Pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance procedures.

Skills and Abilities: Must be able to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries; use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries; determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals; recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid; use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions; and work in an environment with competing priorities. In addition, must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and to serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other healthcare professionals.
