Description

LaGrange College, a private liberal-arts college located in LaGrange, Georgia, seeks qualified candidates for a Graduate Assistant position in National History Day Mentoring Program to start August 2023. NHD is a yearlong program for students in grades 6-12 that encourages them to actively embrace the historical process by conducting research, analyzing data, developing and defending a thesis through one of five different categories. The program seeks to support Georgia students and teachers participating in NHD through a variety of support services including (among others) a query service, web resources, workshops, and contest support. The position requires an average work week of 24 hours. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a first point of contact for student/teacher queries
  • Develop and conduct mentoring workshops in local schools
  • Assist with on campus workshops and camps
  • Manage and regularly update the program's web and social media platforms
  • Provide support and assistance to Lewis Library staff maintaining/updating the NHD research guide (Libguide)
  • Provide NHD contest administrative and day of support (regional and state)
  • Captain the 'Team Georgia' delegation at national competition and develop activities for participants
  • Provide administrative support to the departmental assistant
  • Supervise work study student mentors

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be fully admitted to a LaGrange College graduate program, preferably the MAT program
  • Undergraduate overall GPA of 2.50 or higher
  • Must be able to physically handle the requirements of the job (driving, walking, lifting light/medium packages)
  • Must be able to multitask
  • Must be comfortable learning/using new applications/tech -
  • ***** - Must take initiative - recognize something that needs done and doing it without explicit direction ******
  • Familiarity  with MSOffice AND Google tools

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Overall GPA of 3.0 (GPA in major of 3.25)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in History
  • Experience in NHD as a student competitor and/or volunteer

  • Statement of Purpose (500-1000 words) - describe your qualifications, long-term goals and how this assistantship will contribute to them
  • Writing Sample - a sample that represents your best scholarly work; ideally a research paper which demonstrate your facility with the research process in history
  • Transcripts - unofficial transcripts may be submitted; if awarded the position, an official transcript will be required before beginning the assistantship (not required for applicants currently enrolled at LaGrange College)
  • Letter of Recommendation - should be from a faculty member (outside the history department if an LC student)

Financial Benefits
  • Graduate Assistantship Tuition Courtesy pays for tuition up to 9 credit hours for graduate coursework per semester. The student is responsible for additional fees outlined in the agreement letter.

    Graduate Assistant Stipend totals $4,000.00 per academic year, and it is paid monthly in 10 equal payments, beginning August 30 of the academic year through May 30 of the academic year.
