Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Vice President for Advancement, the Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all fundraising efforts, including the annual fund, major gifts, and planned giving, at LaGrange College. Reporting to and in partnership with the Vice President for Advancement, the Director’s primary goal of the position is to build relationships with individuals and organizations to secure funding to advance the mission of the college. The Director of Development will participate as a member of the Advancement leadership team and will supervise a team.
Job Duties (but not limited to):
- Developing and executing the development operational plan and completion of the yearly goals for the area.
- Responsible for the management of a prospective donor portfolio of individuals, foundations and corporations through personal contacts and relationship-building efforts.
- Developing and tracking proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising
- Planning, coordinating, and participating in gift solicitations, cultivation and stewardship events
- Recruiting and supporting volunteers to maximize alumni giving and constituent participation rates
- Proposing yearly budget recommendations and administering the budget to assure sound fiscal expenditures and management; demonstrating fiscal responsibility and thoughtful planning in the use and care of all college resources
- Participating actively in all required and requested meetings, openly contributing ideas and suggestions to strengthen the college’s development program
- Traveling for face-to-face personal visits on behalf of the college
- Possessing a spirit of cooperation and positive reactions to change and conflict resolution.
- Assisting the vice president, directors and other colleagues in other duties as assigned to meet the challenges and opportunities of LaGrange College’s development goals, especially the LaGrange College Fund and top priorities identified by the President.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred, with a minimum of five (5) years of successful fundraising experience in higher education, three (3) years of managing a personal cultivation and solicitation portfolio of annual gift prospects, and two (2) years of experience supervising staff, preferably professional staff.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent planning, organizational, and implementation skills, with demonstrated ability to set and achieve goals and meet deadlines
Ability to manage several development activities and strategies simultaneously while maintaining timeframes and capacity to determine priorities
Excellent communication (oral, written, speaking) and interpersonal skills
Personal demonstrated traits of integrity, discretion, patience, persistence, good judgment and strong sense of self
Ability to create quality work and handle multiple assignments in a busy department
Demonstrated motivational and problem-solving abilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and education to the mission of the college
Attention to detail and complete documentation requirements of the position accurately and in a timely fashion
Experience articulating concepts of fundraising strategies and techniques
Demonstrated success in soliciting and closing annual gifts
Excellent computer skills and working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge fundraising software
Proven success in motivating and supervising volunteers and professional staff in fundraising
